About Counselling and CBT

At times many of us feel overwhelmed by the problems in our lives. We need a safe, peaceful place with someone we can trust where we can have the space to look at ourselves and the world we are in. Counselling offers us the space to do this. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy builds on this and introduces tools and techniques which we can learn to apply to our own lives and take with us into the future.

The British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) describes CBT “as a psychological approach based on scientific principles and which research has shown to be effective for a wide range of problems. Client and therapist work together to identify thoughts, feelings and behaviour. The approach usually focuses on difficulties in the here and now, and relies on the therapist and client developing a shared view of the individual’s problems. This then leads to the identification of personalised, time – limited therapy goals and strategies which are continually monitored and evaluated. CBT therapists work with individuals, families or groups."

I work in a way that puts you and your problems at the centre of my concern. What you say is confidential and I will encourage you to see the links between your thinking, your feelings and your behaviours and together we will work towards changing these and helping you develop skills to make your life more manageable and achieve what you are looking for in life. We will look at ways to change negative thinking patterns and enable you to feel more in control of your life and feel more positively about yourself.

There are many self help books available and these may be enough to help you with your problem. On the other hand you may think you do understand some of your problem but need a hand exploring further or putting change into practice. You may need to talk things over first before being able to look ahead. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can help you to see things in perspective and begin to look forward.
